Major gold miner Lihir Gold Ltd acquired the Ballarat Goldfields for $A350 million ($US279 M) on the basis the deal could see Lihir matching Newcrest as Australia's premier domestically-owned gold producer. Now, media speculation is that the expensive and under-performing Ballarat re-development may be shut down.

Equinox Minerals announced its preliminary production statistics for the quarter ended June 30, 2009 (“Q2-2009”) from its Lumwana Copper Project in Zambia. During this period, the Lumwana mine was still in the ramp up phase for both the mine and process plant operations.
