Senior Environmental Officer

[Mine] in Central Queensland [Location] is an underground operation with high grade epithermal gold mineralisation. With a team of 150 people, this is a fantastic opportunity to work with talented mining professionals and enjoy an attractive fly in/ fly out lifestyle [Location] .
 
[Mine] currently has a vacancy for a Senior Environmental Officer. Reporting to the Mill Manager, this role is responsible for ensuring that [Mine] meets its compliance requirements as outlined in the Environmental Authority for its operations and ultimate mine closure. The incumbent will also ensure that [Mine] meets the [Employer] corporate requirements. This is a 12 month fixed term position.
 
Your key accountabilities will include:
·         To develop a site specific Environment Management System (EMS) by consulting with [Mine], [Location] , and others to understand and assess external practices in developing a prototype EM System and Plan.
·         Consult with the [Mine] General Manager, Department Managers and Downer EDI to agree on the EMS and EMP as well as KPIs.
·         Monitor ongoing compliance of system and plan.
·         Commissioning external audits.
·         Developing and managing an annual Environmental Business Plan and budget.
·         Ensuring [Mine] meets all relevant [Employer] and external compliance obligations.
·         Build and maintain productive relations with the EPA, Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines and Banana Shire.
·         Conduct water, air, contaminated land and waste rock sampling programmes.
·         Taking appropriate actions in respect to incidents.
·         Conducting inspections of workplaces to identify potential environmental hazards and provide coaching.
·         Preparing for eventual mine closure consistent with the Authority to Operate.
·         Developing and managing an annual Environmental Business Plan and budget.
 
Prerequisites for this role include:
·         Minimum first degree in science.
·         Environmental science degree and postgraduate environmental qualifications are desirable.
·         Minimum 5 years mine site or heavy industry experience.
·         Drivers licence.
·         A proven safety, environment, quality and customer focus.
·         Excellent communication and leadership skills.
·         Experience at dealing with authorities at all levels of government and with local communities.
·         Behaviour consistent with Newcrest values.
