Principal Geologist

We are increasing our mine, rail and port capacity and developing new, high value-in-use products to provide steel makers with competitive advantages. Our newest growth project, Rapid Growth Project 5, will take installed capacity at our Iron Ore operations to 205mpta by the second half of calendar year 2011. Position Synopsis
A core function of [Employer] business, the Resource Evaluation Group’s (REG) Technical Development team is focussed on delivering integrated technical development in geoscience across WA Iron Ore’s exploration and operations.
 
Within this multi-disciplinary team, the Principal Geologist will provide technical direction and mentoring in geological standards and field skills to REG geologists, focussing on mapping, and overseeing the division’s research and development programs to ensure that they are delivered to plan.
 
Reporting to the Superintendent Technical Development, and operating a continuous improvement environment, your key responsibilities will include:
·         Developing and embedding a mapping standard within Western Australian Iron Ore’s (WAIO) operations;
·         Mentoring and training both mining and exploration geoscientists in mapping and geological field skills;
·         Contributing data to proposals and reports;
·         Technical assessment and peer review of major geological programs to ensure delivery to best practice geology standards;
·         Contributing to regional scale geological assessment and project generation activities; and
·         Meeting [Employer] geological research and development requirements, and harnessing the latest geological technologies as appropriate.
 
Skills and Experience
Key to your success in this high profile role will be your superior communication and influencing skills, ability to build effective mentoring relationships within the REG, and to network across [Employer] global exploration groups.
 
You will have tertiary qualifications in geology and knowledge of iron ore exploration. In addition you will have broad technical exploration experience, analytical and strategic planning skills, and experience in leading teams. Exposure to research and development and a proven ability to deliver to a plan are essential.
